Home Before & After | Our Budget Basement Makeover

So earlier this fall my mother moved in with us. And while our guest room is pretty darn cute, we decided that this would be the perfect opportunity to finish out our basement.

If you’ve been reading here for a few years then you know that our homebuying process was filled with crazy and two houses that we loved.  In the end we chose our current home because it had a full basement that was already studded/drywalled/piped for two rooms and a bathroom. This house needed a lot (A LOT) of work but finishing the basement meant it would almost double the living space.

So with less than a month before my mother’s lease was up and a really tiny budget, we decided to DIY. Remember how I had a baby halfway through my pregnancy and so then we just hurriedly threw a bunch of stuff in the basement so we could get a nursery together? Yeah, this is what our basement looked like before. Don’t judge me.

Okay, you can judge. It was so bad. The good news is that I found all of my old Teen Bop magazines featuring Prince William circa 1997. I’m not a hoarder. Not only was it a huge mess but the people who lived here before us did a crap job hanging the drywall so that needed a re-do. There was no trim around any of the doors/windows/floor and about 500 random nails to be pulled out of the walls. Oh and all that permanent marker on the walls was a &@$#! to cover. <- I feel very strongly about this.

(Excuse the terrible lighting) Here is the view of the front room when you walk in. We painted the concrete floor with a dark brown concrete enamel from Lowes. We did NOT etch the floor first. We talked to a lot of different people and since nothing had ever been on the concrete slab before they said that we could just put the enamel paint straight on it. It’s held up wonderfully and I totally recommend it. We hung the floorboard trim a little high in case we ever decide to put in actual flooring.

A (wonderful!) family friend who works as a contractor sold us all of the trim we needed at cost and helped us put it in. We used leftover paint from other (generous!) family members for the ceiling/trim and the accent wall. We added ceiling light fixtures and outlet/switch covers and we were done!

All of the furniture, etc. belongs to my mother, we were really pleased that the space was able to hold her things so well. Actually, that gold chair belongs to me. I am letting her borrow it because I am an awesome daughter. We still need to find a large area rug for the living room and I need to remember to swiffer before I take photos, yo.

You can kind of see in this photo that there is a little hallway connecting the living room to the bedroom/bathroom area. We did not have the budget to finish the bathroom out so it’s just closed off with a door. Luckily we have a guest bath upstairs so while not totally convenient, it works for our needs.  We’re still looking for a desk to go under the shelf so for now the printer, etc. is inside the trunk.

This is the back room that is functioning as a bedroom. Technically it isn’t supposed to be one but technically it doesn’t have a door either so technically it’s within code. That sentence just destroyed grammar. You can see from this before picture that the former owners of this house were not so good with the drywall. No one should ever let them attempt to hang drywall ever again, actually.

I’d show you more of this room but probably my mother would like her privacy. My career choice is rather unfortunate for her.

If you’re wondering what we did with all the stuff that was in the basement before, I will tell you: I am an amazing organizer and I found new homes for everything. And by “new homes” I mean, literally new homes because I got totally overwhelmed and threw together a garage sale and sold everything.

I did not think that through because I keep looking for things like “Hey, where is our round side table? What happened to that set of shelving?” and then I’m all “Oh right, SOLD IT!”

Welcome To Scarlette’s Room

It only took me nineteen months but welcome to the tour of Miss Scarlette’s room  (in case you want a reminder of how it looked before, here is what it used to look like!) Watch out for board books, spilled cheerios and magic wands, which she’s taken to throwing like ninja stars.

The Office Makeover (Finally!)

As I like to say to Scarlette while using jazz hands “All Done!”  It took me forever (and by forever I mean “since we moved in two years ago”) because I’m all cheap  and saved up lots of birthday/holiday gift cards and freebies for everything I needed wanted.

The wallflowers were a gift from Megan of Lilac Saloon. They are one of my favorite things about the space because with the oversize pillows they act as a substitute headboard. And also? They are awesome.

What you don’t see in these pictures are the millions of toys strewn about the floor.  The space is tiny and definitely more functional than catalog worthy – a filing cabinet serves as the nightstand to hold all 5,973,182  of Scarlette’s medical files, the bed lifts off a storage base and there are a bunch of baskets to hold her toys, etc.   But I am just happy that it is done and feels like a happy place to spend most of our day.

By the way, I can’t take a straight picture to save my life. Every shot I take is crooked. I blame my astigmatism. And the Kardashians. And also that gigantic cup of coffee I had before taking these.

The best thing about this room is that the view from my desk is the same as from our balcony. I tried to take another picture with the fall leaves but turns out, photographing through a window screen does not a good picture make.

Thanks for all your input on this project and peeking in our progress!

Office Makeover Peek + Giveaway!

Office_sneak So I decided to go with options B & C because while making a headboard would be awesome, I'm trying this new thing called "being realistic." I'll let you know how that works for me.

I've been saving up gift cards for about 4.3 years and finally used them on the daily system from Pottery Barn. Because I decided it would be useful to own a calendar after I kept scheduling Scarlette's different doctors appointments on the same day. At the same time. Because I'm insane.

Remember how I mentioned the private shopping event at Homegoods, where I was able to get out of the house for the first time in three weeks take some girlfriends and shop at a new store? You can see what I bought for the office/guestroom but also? Homegoods is generously giving away a $100 giftcard to one of my readers (I KNOW!) You definitely want to click here to enter.

My birthday is coming up so I fully expect the office/guestroom to be finished after I get my matching bookcase that I have no idea my family is getting me (winkwink) and some of these beautiful wallflowers by lilac saloon. Scarlette and I spend most of the day in here because it's the coolest room in the house (and by coolest I don't mean phat, I mean "I'm way too cheap to run the air in the front of the house") Since the basement playroom/scrapbook room renovation is a long way off, I am excited about this room being pretty.

P.S. I'm turning off comments on this post to avoid confusion about entering the giveaway.

Decorate My House : The Office/Guest Room

Office-006

My mother and sister got me this bedding set for Mother's Day. I love it so much. Not so much that I've taken the time to iron it, but I mean, one day I'll get around to that. Like say, when I don't have a two and a half six month old wanting to eat every second of the day. Iron? Who has time for ironing? Besides, I still have an aversion to ironing from the that time my iron was invaded by killer ants. Well, just regular ants but still. Creepy.

Anyhow, I am really pleased with the bedding because do you know how hard it is to find bedding that works with dark blue walls? Note to self: randomly choosing paint colors based on paint chips that look pretty in Home Depot is not the smartest way to decorate your house.

My issue is the same issue that I always have: I have no idea what to do with the vast wall space around the bed.

Should I: a) make a headboard because that's a totally do-able project for a woman who can't find the time to iron a duvet cover, b) buy a bunch of different sized decorative pillows and line the whole bed with them like some sort of anthropologied-faux couch or c) put some art on the walls, although which wall to put something on has me all in a kerfluffle. I heard the word kerfluffle somewhere recently and really wanted to use it.

I would love your input. I'm going to a private shopping event at Homegoods this weekend and I want to pick up whatever I need to make this room look better while I am there because mama is trying to pretty up the office without spending any cash. That sounded so blog cheesey. Also, BlogHer and Homegoods are giving away ten $25 Homegoods gift cards so I want to share the love and tell you to go read this and enter to win one.

So what do you think? A, B or C? None-of-the-above is also an acceptable answer, but all-of-the-above is not as I am confused enough already. In theory I'm a great decorator. As in, I can totally make cute home decor boards on Pinterest. In real life, nothing comes together like it does in my head. And thus, I turn to the internet to tell me what to do.
